National

The Cecchetti Vancouver Committee is excited to host the 2012 National Conference and Summer Course for the Cecchetti Society Of Canada this Summer. The Summer Course will be held at Arts Umbrella-Granville Island located at 1286 Cartwright Street,Granville Island BC.

The Summer Course will be from July 29th to August 4th with classes for students and teachers, Cecchetti Grade 5 to Diploma level.

Classes for students include:
Open Ballet, Cecchetti Syllabus,Pointe work, Variations, Modern, Ball-rolling, and Pilates

Classes for teachers include:
Open Ballet,Cecchetti Syllabus(Adv 1-Diploma),Pilates,Ball-rolling,Music, and Pedagogy.

PLUS:

  • Boys syllabus and open boys work.
  • Anatomy and injury prevention.
  • An evening coffee and tea discussion with examiner's.

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday Aug 3rd. All members are invited. Time and location are to be announced.

2012 Cecchetti National Conference & Summer Course

Gillian Hurst RBS Dip (TTC), FISTD (CB), AISTD (NB), ARAD, PDB Spanish Dance Society

Gillian HurstGillian Hurst undertook her early training at Bush Davies and continued on the Royal Ballet School's teacher training course from where she graduated as head student. She moved on to Elmhurst where she taught for six years and from there to Malta before freelancing in London at West Street School, London Studio Centre, the Cecchetti Centre and London Contemporary Dance School. She is a Fellow of the ISTD and a senior examiner for the Cecchetti Faculty which has taken her all over Europe and also to Malaysia. As well as holder of the Enrico Cecchetti Diploma, Miss Hurst is also a Profesora de Baile, holding one of the highest qualifications in Spanish dance, and is an examiner for the Spanish Dance Society. Miss Hurst is Deputy Principal of the Kate Simmons School where she teaches Classical Ballet (Cecchetti) and Spanish. Organiser of the Northern Cecchetti Associates, Miss Hurst is also the principal teacher of BBO Scholars North and a mentor for the BBO Teaching Diploma, as well as a regular faculty member of Cecchetti summer school in Chichester and BBO Dance Days at Elmhurst.

Sheila Kennedy Fellow & Examiner CSC, M.C.D.T.A.

Sheila KennedySheila Kennedy received her initial training from Margaret Saul in London, England, and later from Margaret Marsh who herself trained under Enrico Cecchetti in Italy. She holds the Enrico Cecchetti Final Diploma, teaches all levels of students, has given movement courses for music teachers, worked
with special needs children, and prepares teachers for Cecchetti Qualifying examinations. She has taught and examined throughout Canada, the United States, Britain and South Africa. She was a consultant for the “Ryman's Dictionary of Classical Ballet Terms, Cecchetti”. She is a trustee in charge of the Margaret Saul Scholarship and works for Cecchetti International – Classical Ballet. She is past chairman of the Cecchetti Society of Canada, and was awarded the Enrico Cecchetti Medal by the Cecchetti Society Faculty of the ISTD in 1997.

Joyce Shietze Fellow & Examiner CSC-CICB Enrico Cecchetti Final Diploma Chairman, Cecchetti Society of Canada 1997 –2003 & 2007- Present

Joyce ShietzeJoyce is an accomplished teacher and examiner with many years of experience. Retired from full-time teaching in August 2008, she continues to teach workshops and master classes throughout Canada and the United States. She studied at and taught for the National Ballet School in Toronto, Ontario from 1961-1966. During a portion of this time Joyce held the position of Cecchetti Secretary. Her performance experience includes dancing with the Florida Ballet Company, Xochepillian Dancers, and Ami Hai Dancers. Joyce has continued her professional development in Historical Dance Studies (1991),Character Dance Studies with Kira Zatsepina, Nancy Kilgour, Olga Evreinoff and Ballet Studies with Margaret Saul, Nancy Kilgour, Celia Franca, Sheila Kennedy, Glenn Gilmour,Jean Geddis and Olga Evreinoff. From September 2002 to 2008 Joyce taught at the School of Alberta Ballet, from 2000 to 2002 she was the director of the Teacher Training Programme of Quinte Ballet School in Belleville, Ontario and from 1978-2000 She was Co-Artistic Director and Principal of The School of Dance in Ottawa, Ontario. Joyce continues to be an asset to the Cecchetti Society with responsibilities including course programming, public relations, marketing,financial planning/budgeting and personal matters. She is the author of a teacher training program and a children's syllabus. In 1996, Joyce was a recipient of the Council for the Arts in Ottawa Award for Excellence in Teaching. She has also been awarded an Ontario Arts Council Study Grant, and was Assessor for the Ontario Arts Council. Currently, Joyce is Trustee of the Margaret Saul Scholarship and Chair of the Cecchetti Society of Canada.

Christine Richardson FCSC-CICB, FISTD (Cecchetti), Maestro Cecchetti Diploma, ARAD-RTS

Christine RichardsonChristine Richardson is a Fellow of the Cecchetti Society of Canada and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and has been an examiner for more than 20 years. As well, she holds the prestigious Enrico Cecchetti Final Diploma and is an Associate Life Member of the Royal Academy of Dance. She is a former chair of the Cecchetti Society of Canada. After receiving her original training from Louise Goldsmith in Toronto, ON, she continued to study with various teachers in Toronto and New York. Her professional performing career included popular weekly television programs and specials for CBC Toronto and touring productions in Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Following her performing career, Christine began teaching ballet and jazz, which she has done for over 30 years. In 1990, she founded Island Dance Studio in Victoria, BC and managed it until 2009. Her students won numerous awards and scholarships and many advanced to graduate programs at the National Ballet School, Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, L'École Supérieure de ballet du Quebec, Pacific Northwest Ballet School and School of American Ballet before embarking upon professional performing and other dance-related careers in North America and Europe. Christine is a highly regarded adjudicator and guest teacher, teaching at numerous student and teacher workshops and summer schools throughout Canada including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Teacher Training Program. She served as Ballet Mistress for Ballet Victoria, Head of the Ballet Department at the Canadian College of Performing Arts and rehearsal assistant for the Commonwealth Games, Victoria, BC and Alberta Ballet Company's Nutcracker. Her choreography includes the Butchart Gardens Summer Revue, the New Zealand Commonwealth Games along with numerous pieces for student performances and competitions.

Vincent Hantam

Vincent HantamVincent Hantam was born in Cape Town South Africa and won a scholarship to the Royal Ballet Upper School in 1973. He went on to join the Scottish Ballet in 1975 dancing solo roles from the outset. Principal roles soon followed and by the 1980s box offices across the country were beginning towitness a curious phenomenon: request for information on Vincent Hantam's performance schedule. Of all the technically demanding roles Vincent danced, Spectre-de-la-Rose has been his greatest triumph. Re-creating Nijinsky's legendary role in a production staged by John Gilpin – who was himself taught the role by Nijinsky's partner Karsavina Created roles soon followed: The waters edge by Robert North. Peter Pan by Graham Lustig. Petrushka by Oleg Vinigradov of the Kirov Ballet and many more. After 16 years with the Scottish Ballet Company, Vincent decided it was time to move on. He joined the Napac Dance Company in South Africa where he danced, reproduced ballets and taught the company. He was also a guest dancer with Pact Ballet in Pretoria dancing in Rudolf Nureyev's Don Q, Ashton's Patineur (Blue Boy) and reproduced Spectre-de-la-Rose. In 1991 Vincent was invited to teach at the University of Dance in Cape Town where he stayed for three years before returning to Scotland. The Dance School of New Zealand, Ballet West, Anniesland College and the Dance school of Scotland soon followed. Vincent is based in Glasgow and has become a popular teacher with visiting dance companies to Scotland. He teaches both locally and abroad

Clare Faulkner M.R.Sc., B.S.R., O.T./P.T., C.H.T.

Clare Faulkner currently owns and operates Island Hand Therapy Clinic in Victoria, Sidney, and
Langford,B.C. She graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1976 in Physiotherapy and
Occupational Therapy, and completed a Masters in Rehabilitation Sciences in 2010. Clare has worked in pediatrics, and with acute and chronic conditions in hospitals and private practice. She has given several series of lectures for dance teachers in B.C. and Ontario, and has worked closely with students and teachers at Cecchetti Summer Courses since 1989. She prepared students for the Certificate in Applied Anatomy and Physiology for Dancers, Part I and assisted candidates in preparing to write Part II. She authored the study manuals for Related Subjects at the Associate and Associate Diploma levels and marks the exams for Canada and South Africa.

Tracy Dekker

Tracy DekkerTracy Dekker was introduced to Pilates as a student over 10 years ago. As a dance teacher she fell in love with the classical pilates method of balance of body, mind and spirit. In 2009 she made the plunge into the world of Joseph Pilates, studied under Matilda Christensen and Veronica McClurg, the only 2
teacher trainers of Classical Pilates in Canada, and graduated the Teacher Training Program which is aone year program and requires over 950 hours of intense training. This program is recognized as one the most well respected and thorough programs in the world who's headquarter are at “The Pilates
Centre” in Boulder Colorado. Tracy continues to explore Pilates by taking classes and workshops and believes that there is no end to the depth of the work. She truly believes that Pilates is the best form of exercise and considers it to be life changing not only physically but mentally. Tracy brings both energy and enthusiasm to her classes and enjoys watching clients feel the wonderful benefits of movement done correctly.

Cecchetti Awards Celebration

Shadbolt Centre for the Arts

Auditions were held at our Fall Workshop and 34 students were selected from the age of 9-17. They will perform set classwork and solos in 3 categories, Junior 1, Junior 2 and Senior.

We are pleased to welcome Roberta Bessagio, founder and artistic director of Vancouver City Dance Theatre, to be adjudicating this prestigious event.

Guest Artists including Arts Umbrella Youth Company will perform again after the Cecchetti Awards. The Maria Lewis Scholarship of $1,000 is presented annually to the Senior Winner.
